On Tuesday, March 6 WA students and staff had the exciting opportunity to spend the day with Jeff Yalden. Jeff is a national inspirational speaker and author who travels the U.S. discussing teen mental health and suicide prevention. He has addressed over 4 million people in fifty states. During a two hour school wide assembly Mr. Yalden spoke to WA students about self care, behavior, attitude and choices. He stressed the importance of 8-10 hours of nightly sleep, good nutrition, increased daily activity, and social interaction. A few students were called from the audience to illustrate Jeff's life lessons. Mr. Yalden also met with the WA Students Teaching About Respect (STARS) group, class officers and student council members. Mr. Yalden shared his knowledge, experience, and awareness-prevention practices with faculty during a special presentation after school. Students and staff enjoyed the day and graciously thanked Mr. Yalden for his words and visit!

The WA Players are back at it! The group has been busy this week practicing and performing the production "Things Fall (Meanwhile)" by Barton Bishop. The Players are directed by WA science teacher James Ausprey. The group's first public performance took place on Tuesday, March 6 in the WA cafeteria. The stage was set with pieces designed by WA Vocational Education teacher Shawn Schmitter and senior art student Harold Cai. Set design and costumes were put together by WA English teacher Cathy Johnson and freshman Selena Williams. Lighting and sound were provided by freshman Griffin Dedmon and junior Arthur Ingalls. It was a night of collaborated effort to perform this entertaining drama/comedy. The Players also performed during the school day on Wednesday, March 6 for our students and staff. This weekend the students will travel to Mount Desert High School to perform their play and compete against other area high schools. Next week they will perform at the Eastport Arts Center on Thursday, March 15 at 6:00 pm.

Over thirty local and residential skiers enjoyed a trip last week to Bigrock Mountain in Mars Hill. Bigrock's thirty trails and popular ski school offered opportunities for our skiers and snowboarders of all levels of abilities to experience a full day on the slopes, culminating in dinner on the way back to campus. WA Assistant Director of Residential Life, David Mercer remarked, "Bigrock has a good mix of runs and is a great value for students." The trips have been such a success that the group plans to return next year!
