Staff & Faculty Opportunities
Leadership Roles
WA believes in strong collective leadership and collaborative work, which effectively impacts school culture, policy, and curriculum. The Teacher Leadership Team and various committees meet monthly to propose strategic improvements to daily school operations and culture. Department chair positions are also available to faculty members designated within education content areas. These roles within the school provide a direct connection between the faculty, staff, and administration, and ensure that decisions are made informed by those who have the closest connection to day-to-day student life, academics, and logistics.
Professional Development
Professional development opportunities for all WA employees are essential for enhancing skills and fostering a supportive school environment. These opportunities come in various forms to meet different needs. Workshops, seminars, and conferences (in and out of school) are encouraged to keep employees growing in their current positions and beyond. Faculty and staff are encouraged not only to attend and learn, but also to share information from their practice at Washington Academy through presenting at sessions, submitting proposals and papers, and participating on panels with colleagues. WA also participates in local and state level communities of practice and network to bring additional opportunities to faculty and staff. Faculty members have opportunities to pursue advanced degrees (master's or doctorate) or certifications in specialized areas (e.g., ESL, STEM, educational leadership) that can further their knowledge and skills.
New Faculty Mentorship
The WA New Faculty Mentor Program is led by the school's Associate and Assistant Heads. It ensures new teachers and education technicians are provided guidance and support, especially in their first year of belonging to the Raider community and supporting students through the curriculum. The mentorship program focuses on how to navigate Raider school culture, policies, and resources effectively as well as providing support in carrying out day- to-day functions like classroom management, parent-teacher conferences, and being a student advisor. WA believes all new teachers should feel welcomed, supported, and connected.
Collaborative Teaching Opportunities
WA's close-knit school environment provides many cross-curricular resource-sharing and collaborative teaching opportunities. A recent collaborative experience included the career technology and science departments coming together in the school garden to combine efforts, resulting in successful planting and harvest results. Teaching collaborations at WA demonstrate to students the importance of working together in an environment fostering dynamic learning.
Health and Wellness Program
Since the early 1900s, WA has recognized the correlation and benefits between a healthy mind and body. The Raider Health and Wellness Program is led by the school nurse, who provides health and disease prevention tips to staff and faculty throughout the school year. The Program also provides a bi-annual fitness challenge for employees, including awards and participation recognition. All employees are granted access to the on campus fitness room free of charge as well as invited to walk the trails on the 100 acre campus. Due to the two working hoop houses on campus, faculty and staff are also invited to flex their green thumbs through collaboration with the AmeriCorps and science faculty who work regularly with students in growing produce and trees and shrubs for salmon habitat restoration. Not to mention the wildflowers and natural habitat of the campus location which promotes mindfulness and connection to nature daily.
Employee of the Quarter Recognition
Traditionally, WA recognizes three employees during quarterly student academic award ceremonies. Students select WA Employees of the Quarter for going above and beyond in their work responsibilities. The WA administration team also recognizes these employees with a local business gift card. Quarterly student and staff award assemblies are a spirited all-school event!
