Experience the Real Maine!

East Machias, home of Washington Academy, embodies everything that is great about small town America. It is a rural environment where people know their neighbors and look out for each other. With one of the lowest crime rates in the nation, Maine is a safe haven for WA students.

West Quoddy Head, in Quoddy Head State Park, Lubec is the easternmost Point of the contiguous United States. In 1808 a lighthouse was constructed at the site to guide ships through the Quoddy Narrows. The current tower, with distinctive red-and-white stripes, was constructed in 1858 and is an active aid to navigation.

Orange River, in Whiting offers convenient access for launching canoes and kayaks. While this area is best explored by boat, a paddle-access hiking trail leading to the summit of Estey Mountain offers stunning views of Roaring Lake and the surrounding wild landscape.

The area that is now East Machias was first settled in the 1760s, and was part of neighboring Machias until 1826. Its principal settlement grew near a falls on the East Machias River, where several mills were established. Washington Academy, founded in 1792, was given a permanent home in East Machias in 1823.

Cutler is one of the last harbors on the Maine Coast before the Canadian border.  It is a lovely, busy fishing village with well-maintained houses, fishing boats, and working piers. The harbor is well protected, and you can see right out to the ocean on either side of Little River Island.  The scenery is picturesque, the inhabitants are friendly, and there are many excellent hiking opportunities.

Roque Bluffs State Park on 274 acres on Schoppee Point is a beautiful, half-mile crescent of sand and pebbles along Englishman Bay, backed by the shallow waters of 60-acre Simpson Pond. Between the beach and the pond are several picnic areas and a children’s play area. A three mile trail network just inland from the shore leads through old orchards, fields and woods, with paths that follow the rocky shores of Great Cove and Pond Cove.

Machias is the county seat of Washington County in Down East Maine with a population of approximately 2,060. It is home to the University of Maine at Machias and the Machias Valley Airport a small public airport owned by the town. The word Machias roughly translates in Passamaquoddy as "bad little falls", a reference to the Machias River. Machias was the site of the first naval battle of the American Revolution in 1775.
