WA Senior Wins Excellent Chinese Learner Award

Seth Wilcox, a senior at Washington Academy, won the  Excellent Chinese Learner award in a Chinese speech performance at the 2022 Maine Chinese Conference at Husson University in Bangor.

The two-day conference was presented by The Chinese Language and Culture Center of Maine and Bangor Chinese School in collaboration with The Maine Department of Education, the University of Maine, and the City of Bangor on October 28 and 29.  The topics of the conference included Chinese education and culture.

Each year school administrators, board members, teachers, students, parents, members of institutions of higher education, businesspeople, politicians, entrepreneurs, and other interested community members are invited to participate in the annual Maine Chinese Conference.

On the first day of the conference, Seth, from Jinrong (Jill) He’s Chinese Cultural Studies class, participated in the performance segment of the event along with students from Bonny Eagle High School from Standish, Maine. From the podium, Seth confidently introduced himself in Chinese and then recited a poem in Chinese called, 读中国 (Getting to Know China) to the audience.

Seth has only been learning to speak Chinese for approximately one month, and Ms. He is impressed with his dedication to learning the language. She notes that he even invests his free time outside of class perfecting his pronunciation and diction.

Ms.He also commented, “I thought his performance was amazing, and all the Chinese teachers who attended the conference said his pronunciation was clear. Many students think Chinese is difficult.  I hope this accomplishment will inspire them.”

“I am interested in Chinese culture, so I was excited to sign up for Ms. He's Chinese Cultural Studies class. I’ve been learning more about the country and its culture through her class,” says Seth. “I hope to go to college and continue my Chinese studies and maybe make a plan to visit China after graduating college.”

Other students in Ms. He’s class who attended the event are Trinity Cheney ‘25, Jadalyn Graham ‘25, Xinyue Hou ‘24, Josephine Keene ‘25, Maya Lopez ‘26, Daniel Moores ‘26, Yeray Muriedas ‘23, and Tai Phan ‘23.
