Head of School Provides May 8 Update to Underclassmen

Dear Raider Underclassmen & Parents,

The Governor’s Reopening Plan has four stages. Stage two, which begins June 1, limits gatherings to under 50 people.  Not surprising to any of us these restrictions will not allow us to be able to return to in-person instruction at Washington Academy and we will continue with distance learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

I am frustrated and sad that our students will not able to be here with us and enjoy our traditional end of year activities, but I am thankful to be part of this community.  I understand the challenge that this has been for students, parents, teachers, administrators and staff and I commend you all for the work you have done and the sacrifices you have made.  As challenging as this has been as a school, my heart goes out to all of you parents who are out of work at this time or whose businesses have been impacted and students and families who have had to endure isolation.  I pray that this will turn around quickly for all of you.

Juniors, you will be the first class that I recall that did not have a Junior Prom.  However, next year, you will be the first class at Washington Academy that I know of that will have a Senior Prom.  Sophomores, do not worry we will still have Junior Prom for you next year, so there will be a lot of dancing and celebrating when we are all back together.

We will move this spring’s Academic Awards and End of Year Assembly Awards for underclassmen to next year, so you will not miss out on that, it will just be delayed.

Underclassmen your last day of school will be on May 29.  The week of June 1-5 will be Makeup Week for students who have missing work.  We will communicate with your dates and times that you can return textbooks, laptops, and other materials and retrieve items from your lockers.  In many cases, we can coordinate pick up of these items from your home when we make food deliveries.

There will be other items we have to consider and if you have a question or a suggestion please feel free to reach out to me.  I am in my office daily and you can reach me at 255-8301 ext. 205 or you can email me at headmaster@raider4life.org.  I will be out of the office today picking up lawn signs to celebrate our seniors so I will not have a weekly video assembly.

We are anxious for you all to return to WA in the fall, so we have developed a WA task force to plan for a safe return to school for the fall 2020 and we anxiously await further information from the Commissioner of Education and the Governor.

Please know that we love and miss you and think of you often.
