Head of School Announces Class of 2021 Honor Parts


 

 


 

Judson McBrine, Head of School at Washington Academy in East Machias, proudly announces the honor parts for the graduating Class of 2021 as follows: 

 

Earning distinction as Valedictorian is Sarah Otto, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Otto of Machias. Sarah is a well-rounded member of the Washington Academy student body. She is a high honor student, a member of the National Honor Society, and spends countless hours participating in WA fine arts and athletic programs. She is a three-year Cultural Dance Teaching Assistant and a 3-year member of the Washington Academy Drama Club, WA Players. Sarah is also a volleyball program member, playing her freshman and sophomore years and managing her junior and senior years. She is also active in the community as a 3-year Community Service Day participant. Sarah plans on attending the University of Maine at Machias, and her major is undecided. 

 

This year's Salutatorian is Gabrielle Morang, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Morang of Edmunds. Gabrielle is a 2-year member of the National Honor Society and the recipient of the 2018 Washington Academy Kindness Award and the 2019 Academic Excellence Award. Throughout her four years at Washington Academy, Gabrielle has been a member of the Varsity Basketball team. She is the recipient of the 2018 and 2019 Most Improved Award and the 2020 Love of the Game Award. She is an engaged member of the Quiz Bowl and Applied Media Clubs and a Teacher's Assistant in Cultural Dance Class and the Larson Library. Gabrielle is also an active community service participant in Edmunds. She is planning to attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle, majoring in nursing. 


 

First Honor Essayist for Washington Academy's Class of 2021 is Sophie Bragg, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Judd Bragg of Machias. Sophie is a 3-year member of the National Honor Society and the recipient of numerous academic awards including, the 2018 Washington Academy Excellence Award, 2019 Excellence in Economics, 2019 Excellence in Biology, and 2019 Excellence in US History. She is a well-rounded member of the 2021 student body participating in class government, athletics, and the fine arts. She is the 2019 Class Vice President. Sophie is also a 3-year member of the Varsity Track and Field Team, a 2-year member of the Raider Volleyball Team, a 1-year member of the Raider Cheer Team, and a 1-year Washington Academy Band member. She also participates after school in the Sustainability Club and as a member of the Washington Academy Civil Rights Team. In the fall, Sophie will be attending Villanova University majoring in biology.


 

The second Honor Essayist is Hudson Morris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Morris of Charlotte. Hudson is a high honor student and a member of the National Honor Society. He is also a 4-year member of the Washington Academy Cross Country Team, a 3-year member of the Varsity Track and Field Team, and a 1-year member of the Varsity Swim Team. Hudson is an engaged member of many after-school clubs, including Students Teaching About Respect (STARS), Math Team, Science Club, Chess Club, Sustainability Club, and NAMI Maine Sources of Strength. He is also a participant in the University of Maine 4-H Tech Changemakers. Hudson is planning to attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle, majoring in accounting.
