Mrs. Avery Art
Felicia Avery, Art
A wise teacher, Kahlil Gibran once said, "does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of you own mind."
Felicia Avery is such a teacher. Starting with "quality materials, a safe environmental and pertinent information," Mrs. Avery works to give her students a wide range of experiences with different materials in order to produce works of imagination and vision. "I put a lot of energy into the studio experience because I believe it brings the greatest lifelong rewards."
Making art, says Mrs. Avery, is not a matter of right or wrong answers. This is why she especially enjoys watching students who don't excel at more traditional subjects discover they are good at creating art. "It's a great moment for both of us," she says. Mrs. Avery's goals for all her students include "skill development, self-reflection, and fearless experimentation with the creative process."
Mrs. Avery does not merely teach "thinking outside the box." She lives it. She and her family have lived off the power grid for 23 years, using only solar electricity, pitcher pumps and has gas appliances, a way of life she finds "challenging and rewarding."
