A good portion of eastern Washington County received many helping hands on two Saturdays in May. From tree planting in Wesley, to upkeep at the Lubec Playground, Washington Academy students and faculty aimed to make a difference. Activities included grounds and animal care at The Ark Animal Shelter in Cherryfield, ground work at the Porter Memorial Library in Machias, a car wash in conjunction with the Machias Rotary Club to raise money for the Washington/Hancock County Food and Fuel Alliance, a National Honor Society organized Walk for Cystic Fibrosis in East Machias, as well as a sidewalk sweeping in East Machias, and a clean-up at the Jacksonville Cemetery. Currently, all students are required to complete 15 hours of community service each school year. These activities went above and beyond what is required.
Anne Zegers and Jessie Hardy work on a picnic table at the Porter Memorial Library
in Machias for their community service.
