College Placement

graduate At Washington Academy, we are here to help students make the important leap to the college of their choice. After all, we've been preparing students for college since 1792! The majority of college-bound Washington Academy students are admitted to the college of their choice. Here are some of the many ways we work to make your college dreams come true.

College Aspirations Program: Junior or senior students who are ready for the challenge can take two college classes a semester at The University of Maine at Machias for free! This is a great way to get an early start on your college career.

Advanced Placement: Washington Academy offers six AP (Advanced Placement) classes each year. These courses offer the same content as first-year college classes. Students who do well on the final exam earn college credit.

Advisor/Advisee Program: Our Advisor/Advisee Program matches you and a small group of students with a faculty member who will work with you during your time at Washington Academy. You will get to know your group and your faculty mentor, and find them a source of support and friendship.

Your Washington Academy mentor will help you choose classes, find resources, identify your strengths and help you grow as a person. Your mentor will help make sure you and your group are on the right path, academically and personally.

Guidance: Our guidance counselors are specially trained to help students meet their academic and career goals. You are welcome to come to their office to browse through college catalogs or research schools on the computer. During your school years, you'll have many chances to sit down and talk with our guidance counselor. You can take tests and surveys that help you choose goals that match your strengths and interests. Finally, when it comes time to fill out college applications, your guidance counselor will be right there, ready to help.

College Representatives: At different times during the year, we invite representatives from a number of colleges to meet with students. This makes it easy for you to talk first-hand with people who can answer your questions. We make sure a large number of schools are represented so you can learn about your options.

Washington Academy also sponsors trips to college fairs and New England colleges throughout the year.

Student Mentor Program

Our mentor program at Washington Academy matches a small group of students with a faculty member who is specially trained to mentor adolescents. This small group meets with this faculty member weekly throughout the students¡ time at Washington Academy.

Students consistently tell us that their faculty mentor is a positive role model and that they continue to grow personally through this program. This coincides with national research that shows mentored students to be higher academic achievers, have more self-esteem and respect for others, among other benefits.
