If anyone at Washington Academy has
a "hands-on" teaching style, it is Donald
Sprangers, head of our Environmental
Studies Program.
Over the years, Mr. Sprangers has
received considerable recognition for
his work as a teacher and scientist.
In 2003, Mr. Sprangers was awarded the
National Science Foundation's Presidential
Award for Excellence in Science Teaching!
But the highlight of his career, he
says, is his recent work as Team Advisor
to several Washington Academy students
who took first place at the National
Youth Watershed Summit for their work
in helping restore salmon populations
and sensitive habitat areas.
Mr. Sprangers holds a Masters Degree
in Ecological Teaching and Learning
from Lesley College. He is secretary
for the Downeast Salmon Federation,
Vice President of the East Machias River
Watershed Council, and has over 22 years
of experience working with the Boy Scouts
of America.
In his 13th year at Washington Academy,
Mr. Sprangers teaches Chemistry and
Field Ecology.
