Science
and Mathematics
Mr. Rensema knows first hand how
math and science apply to the real world—and
beyond. A retired Air Force Officer, Pete
Rensema worked in space systems when he
was in the service. "It influenced my
teaching tremendously. "
Despite his early career path, math
and science did not always come easily
to Mr. Rensema as a student. "Even though
I earned decent grades, I found both
math and science intimidating," he says.
Today, keeping both topics "less threatening"
for students is one of his most interesting
challenges. The result of that work—"seeing
the lightbulb turn on when a concept
becomes clear"—is one of his greatest
rewards.
While Mr. Rensema's classes are challenging,
he believes every student can succeed,
as long as they bring three essential
ingredients to each class: "dedicated
desire to learn, a strong work ethic
and a T1-83 calculator."
In his 8th year at Washington Academy,
Mr. Rensema still appreciates the child-centered
attitude he finds among his fellow teachers
at WA. "The team at Washington Academy
truly is focused around what is best
for each student."
Like many Washington Academy faculty,
Mr. Rensema is an "outdoors" person,
naming golf, fishing and reading among
his favorite leisure activities.
