While teaching English
as a Second Language is a relatively
knew assignment in her 24-year history
with Washington Academy, Mrs. Johnson
has quickly fallen in love with both
the process and her students. "I'm fascinated
by language immersion and acquisition,"
she says. She also appreciates "how
open and eager many of our international
students are to share their cultures
with me and their fellow students."
Mrs. Johnson's love
for active learning and living extends
beyond the classroom, where she is involved
in community and college theatre, filmmaking,
hiking, kayaking, and volunteer work
at the Abbey Museum in Bar Harbor.
In addition
to her work at Washington Academy teaching
English as a Second Language, Mrs. Johnson
is also the Academy's drama coach. Each
year she leads the WA Players in two
major productions in the spring and
fall. Cathy Johnson and her talented
drama students frequently bring home
the winning trophy at the annual One-Act
Play Competition, where Washington Academy
students travel to compete with other
schools across Maine.
