Making art, says Mrs. Avery, is not
a matter of right or wrong answers.
This is why she especially enjoys watching
students who don't excel at more traditional
subjects discover that they are good
at creating art. "It's a great moment
for both of us," she says. Mrs. Avery's
goals for all her students include "skill
development, self-reflection, and fearless
experimentation with the creative process."
Mrs. Avery does not merely teach "thinking
outside the box." She lives it. She
and her family have lived off the power
grid for 23 years, using only solar
electricity, pitcher pumps and gas appliances,
a way of life she finds "challenging
and rewarding."
