Outdoor Recreation
There are so
many choices, so close to home! We can
only mention a fraction of them. Whether
you're into arts, sports, or just being
outdoors, you will have many options.
Enjoy the water? Maine has over 3,500
miles of coastline, and hundreds of
beautiful, clear lakes. Many of our
Environmental Studies classes take place
near or even "knee deep" in the water.
Whitewater rafting, canoeing, sea kayaking,
fishing, whale watching, swimming: it's
all waiting for you in Maine's beautiful
ponds, lakes, rivers, and magificent
Atlantic Ocean coast.
When the snow falls, it's time for
skiing or snowboarding. Some nearby
ski mountains light up trails so the
fun doesn't stop at sundown. Of course,
you can skate, snowshoe, go cross-country
skiing, or just enjoy building a snowman.
(And have lots of snowball fights with
your friends!)
How about visiting a state park? Maine
has over half a million acres of them!
Try nearby Quoddy Head State Park, with
its tall granite ledges and crashing
tides. Or check out the nesting eagles
at Moosehorn National Wildlife preserve.
Climb a mountain. You can enjoy the
scenery on the way up nearby Lead Mountain,
or take on some serious rock scrambling
as you tackle the majesty of Mount Katahdin
at Maine's own Baxter State Park—the
highest point on the east coast of the
U.S.
Arts & Culture
Maine people
love the arts as much as they do the
outdoors. Many towns have their own
local history museums, and our state
is dotted with wonderful old forts,
historic buildings, and other points
of interest. From the coast to the western
mountains, you can wonderful art galleries
and unique shops everywhere. And when
warm weather comes, countless festivals
across the state bring music, dance
and theater to everyone.
Music & Theater
It's a short trip to see drama year-round
at the Stage East Theater in Eastport.
For world-famous performances, we also
take trips to the Maine Center for the
Arts in Orono to see everything from
Shakespeare to stand-up comedy, or chamber
music to modern rock.
Film
For independent and classic films, students
can visit UMM's coffeehouse. For the
newest films and the most choices, Hoyt's
Cinemas in Bangor is a frequent choice
for weekend trips.
Museums
Two of our students' favorites within
a comfortable drive are the Farnsworth
Museum with its many paintings from
three generations of Wyeths (N.C., Andrew,
and Jamie) and the University of Maine
Museum of Art, whose modern art collection
includes work by Andy Warhol.
Faith & Worship
For students who wish to take part in
religious services, Washington Academy
will help arrange transportation to
the nearby worship center of your choice.
