East Machias, a small
town on the eastern coast of Maine,
is home to Washington Academy. Within
two miles of the ocean, atop a hill,
Washington Academy consists of seven
buildings on a beautiful, 45-acre campus.
The school is a blend of history and
modernization. As you approach, you
will first see the tall, white tower
of the original Academy Building, built
in 1823, which is home to foreign languages,
mathematics and special education.
From the front steps, you can see
the Cates House and the Larson House,
both dorms for boarding students.
Across the street, the newly renovated
Alumni Building serves as the heart
of Washington Academy. It includes many
classrooms, our guidance department,
five computer labs, the performing arts
stage, and the cafeteria, as well as
an inviting library with over 10,000
books.
Directly behind the Alumni building
is The Gardner Gymnasium, one of the
best athletic facilities in the state.
It has two courts and a seating capacity
of 1,100, a weight room, and a training
room. Also within the gym complex are
the music classrooms. As soon as you
step inside, you'll see how seriously
we take music: we have tiered seating
and practice rooms as well as a computer
lab for music composition.
Beside the Gardner Gymnasium is the
Industrial Technology Building. This
building contains the Marine Trades
Program, Industrial Arts, and Computer
Networking and Repair. The Marine Trades
classroom area has computerized numerical
cutting equipment, a professional paint
booth, fiberglass boat building machines,
and even equipment for the construction
of historical bent-lathe canoes!
Behind the main buildings are the
soccer, baseball, and softball fields,
and our outdoor basketball courts. Behind
the fields, a cross-country course winds
its way up through steep and rugged
blueberry fields.
Our campus is an inviting, embracing
home at every season of the year...we
invite you to discover it for yourself.
